Neurodiversity

Designing Learning Around Strengths

Every individual learns differently.

The ThinkingBigger Learning Architecture Framework recognises that there is no single approach to learning that works for everyone. Instead, it encourages the design of learning environments that recognise individual strengths, build confidence and support independent thinking.

Rather than asking people to fit a system, the framework encourages systems to better support the people within them.

A Strengths-Based Perspective

Neurodiversity is not simply about recognising differences. It is about recognising potential.

Many neurodivergent individuals demonstrate exceptional creativity, curiosity, problem-solving and innovative thinking when learning environments are designed to support their strengths.

The ThinkingBigger Learning Architecture Framework focuses on creating opportunities where individuals can develop confidence, independence and meaningful participation by understanding how they learn best.

Learning That Works for Everyone

Effective learning environments are:

  • Inclusive by design.
  • Built around curiosity and engagement.
  • Structured to encourage confidence.
  • Flexible enough to recognise different ways of thinking.
  • Focused on developing independence rather than dependence.

By placing learning at the centre, the framework supports individuals in developing skills that extend beyond education into employment, relationships and everyday life.

From Potential to Participation

The goal is not simply to improve educational outcomes.

It is to help individuals:

  • Build confidence.
  • Develop independent learning skills.
  • Strengthen communication.
  • Solve problems creatively.
  • Participate more fully in education, work and community life.

Learning becomes a pathway towards greater independence and opportunity.

Learning in Practice

The principles of the ThinkingBigger Learning Architecture Framework are applied through BrainyBudz CIC, where Gary Fyles and the team work alongside neurodivergent young people, adults, families and organisations.

BrainyBudz focuses on helping individuals recognise their strengths, develop confidence and build practical pathways towards learning, independence and community participation.

Rather than defining people by labels, the emphasis is placed on understanding how individuals learn and creating environments in which they can flourish.

Gary's Perspective

Throughout his career, Gary Fyles found himself naturally connecting with children and adults who often experienced learning differently.

Years later, this work took on a more personal meaning as he recognised aspects of his own learning journey and came to understand that many of the qualities often viewed as challenges could also become significant strengths when supported appropriately.

This experience reinforced a belief that continues to shape the ThinkingBigger Learning Architecture Framework: Every individual has the capacity to learn, grow and contribute. The challenge is not changing the individual, but designing learning environments that allow their strengths to emerge.

Looking Ahead

Awareness of neurodiversity continues to grow across education, workplaces and communities.

The opportunity now is to move beyond awareness towards meaningful inclusion.

By designing learning experiences that recognise different ways of thinking, organisations can unlock potential, encourage participation and create environments where every individual has the opportunity to succeed.

The ThinkingBigger Learning Architecture Framework provides a practical foundation for making this possible.
